Similar to Affirmative Action programs, a Diversity Hire is when a company purposely hires an individual based off the nationality, sexual identity, or both in lieu of qualifications simply for the sake of appearing to be more tolerant and prove a point about the cis, white men that supposedly dominate the work force.
